The Splendid Artesia Fair
Every summer growing up, the Artesia Fair livened up our town, complete with parade, queen, cotton candy, and games where you could dunk an adult (preferably your teacher) in a barrel of water.
Big tents that smelled of animals. My cute brother with the big smile grooming his cow with confidence that he would surely get a ribbon in the 4H competition this year. Then showing his prize progeny as solemnly as if this were serious business.
Roller coasters, the Hammer (scary), tea cups (my favorite) and a big Ferris Wheel.
The Ferris Wheel took you so high in the air:looking up was exciting-scary, and looking down even more so. Hanging in space, with just some metal beams to hold you up,usually with a seat mate whose idea of fun was to rock it as much as possible.
We didn't have all the attractions kids do today, but we did have the Artesia Fair, and that was excitement enough.
